Net Zero Plan
PayCaptain is a net zero emissions company. We calculate our scope 3 CO2 emissions accurately and we have reduction targets in place to ensure our emissions are continuously reduced where possible. PayCaptain is a fully remote company and does not have any scope 1 or scope 2 emissions (all emissions related to our employees are included in scope 3).
In 2024 PayCaptain employed 22 people who worked a total of 39,904 hours. The CO2 emissions related to these working hours was 22.3 tCO2e (including laptop usage, heating and lighting).
We calculated our CO2 emissions related to all other expenditure in 2024 to be 135 tCO2e. Our total emissions for 2024 are therefore 158 tCO2e.
PayCaptain produced a total of 351,730 payslips in 2024. So, if we allocate our carbon emissions based on each payslip produced it would mean one payslip is 450g CO2e.
PayCaptain is investing in peatland restoration to help achieve our Net Zero objective. For 2024, we are purchasing Pending Issuance Units (PIUs) from Swarthghyll Peatland Restoration Project in the Yorkshire Dales run by The Future Forest Company, which represent 160 tonnes of carbon dioxide which are expected to be sequestered over the lifetime of the peatland over the next 100 years.
We also calculate the power consumption used by our customers (their employees and their admin users) when they are using PayCaptain. For 2024 we purchased 19 Megawatt hours of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) certificates. This covers 25,000 employees using PayCaptain on their mobile phones and Admin Users spending 1,200 hours using PayCaptain on their computers.
In addition to the above, since inception, PayCaptain has partnered with Ecologi and funded the planting of 12,455 trees and supported the prevention of 279.26 tCO2e from being emitted through verified carbon avoidance projects.
In 2022 and 2023 with the support of the team at BigCleanSwitch we purchased a total of 100 Megawatt hours of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGOs) certificates.
We first calculated our CO2 emissions in 2022 to be 121 tonnes when we had 9 employees and produced 36,153 payslips. Based on our continuous improvement of measurement we beleive this emissions calculation was over inflated by a factor of 10.
In 2025 we are partnering with PlanetMark to improve the accuracy of our carbon emissions calculations, strengthen our reduction goals and establish a carbon removal initiative that aligns with our values and objectives. We will also work closer with our main suppliers to deepen our understanding of their net zero targets.
